Shopify vs Daraz: a brand owner comparing her own online store with a marketplace

Shopify gives you your own store and your own customers. Daraz gives you a ready crowd of shoppers but keeps the customer relationship. Most growing Pakistani brands end up needing both, in the right order.

Daraz is a marketplace: fast to start, shoppers already there, but you compete on price next to other sellers

Shopify is your own store: you control the brand, prices, data and repeat customers, but you must bring the traffic yourself

On Daraz every sale pays a commission and fees. On Shopify you pay a monthly plan, and COD orders carry no extra Shopify transaction fee

Brands that want to build a name and run ads should make Shopify their home and treat Daraz as an extra sales channel

Our rule of thumb: test demand on Daraz, build the brand on Shopify, and never let a marketplace be your only shop
Short answer: If you only want to sell some stock quickly and you do not plan to spend on ads, Daraz is the easier start. If you want to build a brand that people remember, search for by name and buy from again, Shopify should be your main store. For most serious Pakistani brands, the best answer is not “Shopify or Daraz” but “Shopify first, Daraz as a second channel”.

We build and run Shopify stores for Pakistani brands every day, and many of those brands also sell on Daraz. This guide is written from that day-to-day experience, not from a feature list. It explains the real difference in plain language so you can decide without guessing.

The real difference in one line

Daraz is a shopping mall. Shopify is your own shop on the main road.

In a mall, people are already walking past, so you get visitors without doing much. But the mall sets the rules, takes a share of every sale, shows your neighbour’s cheaper product right next to yours, and keeps the shopper’s details. On the main road, nobody walks in unless you invite them, but the shop, the sign board, the prices and the customer list are all yours.

Everything else in this comparison comes back to that one idea: borrowed traffic versus owned customers.

Where Daraz wins

Daraz deserves credit. For many sellers it is the fastest way to get a first order in Pakistan. Here is where it is genuinely strong:

Ready traffic. Millions of Pakistanis open the Daraz app to search for products. If your product is something people already search for, such as a phone cover or a kitchen tool, you can get orders without any ads.
Trust from day one. A first-time buyer who has never heard of your brand trusts the Daraz app, its returns and its payment system more than an unknown website.
Logistics handled. Daraz runs its own delivery and payment collection, which removes a big headache for a new seller.
Sale events. Big campaigns like 11.11 can bring a sudden flood of orders if your price and stock are right.

If you are testing whether a product sells at all, Daraz is a cheap way to find out.

Where Daraz holds you back

The problems with Daraz usually appear once you start growing, not on day one.

You are always next to a cheaper option. A buyer who searches for your product sees five similar ones on the same screen. That pushes most sellers into a price race that eats their profit.
The customer is not yours. You cannot easily message last month's buyers about your new collection. When they want to buy again, they search Daraz again and may pick someone else.
Every sale pays a share. Daraz takes a commission and other charges from each order. The exact rate depends on your category and changes over time, so always check the latest rate card in Seller Center before setting your price.
Your brand looks like everyone else. Every product page follows the same layout. It is hard to tell your story, show your quality or build loyalty.
Rules can change overnight. Fee updates, policy changes or a drop in search ranking can cut your sales, and you have little control over it.

Where Shopify wins

Shopify is the platform we recommend as the home for almost every brand that wants to grow beyond a side business. The reasons are practical:

Your brand, your way. You decide how the store looks, which products are shown first, what offer appears on the home page and how your story is told.
You own the customer list. Every order gives you a name, phone number and address. That list is the most valuable thing a brand owns, because selling again to an existing customer costs far less than finding a new one.
Ads work properly. Meta and TikTok ads can send people straight to your product, track who bought, and find more people like them. This is how brands scale profitably.
Higher margins. There is no per-order marketplace commission. You pay your Shopify plan, your courier and your payment charges, and the rest is yours.
Freedom to sell your way. Bundles, combo offers, free gifts, upsells, loyalty points and pre-orders are all possible with the right setup.

Where Shopify is harder

Shopify is not magic, and it is not right for everyone on day one.

No free traffic. A new Shopify store gets almost no visitors unless you bring them through ads, social media, influencers or SEO.
You manage the operations. You need a courier account for COD, someone to confirm orders and a process for returns.
Setup needs skill. A store that is slow, confusing or missing trust signals will waste your ad money. A proper store is a real investment.

If you have no plan or budget to bring traffic, a Shopify store will feel empty. That is the most common reason people say “Shopify does not work in Pakistan”. The store was fine. Nobody was invited.

The money question: what does each one really cost?

Owners often compare only the monthly fee. The better way is to look at what you keep from each order.

On Daraz

Think of every order as: sale price minus commission, payment and other marketplace charges, minus your product cost and packaging. Because of price competition, many sellers also cut their price to stay visible, which lowers the margin further.

On Shopify

Think of every order as: sale price minus product cost, courier charges and packaging, minus your share of the monthly plan, apps and ad spend. Shopify’s Basic plan is $39 a month, or $29 a month when billed yearly. Cash on delivery is a manual payment method, so Shopify does not add its own transaction fee to COD orders. If you use a third-party online payment gateway, Shopify charges a small extra percentage on those card orders depending on your plan.

Here is the honest summary: Daraz costs you a share of every sale. Shopify costs you a fixed amount plus marketing. As your sales grow, the Shopify model usually leaves more profit per order, because the fixed costs are spread across more orders while marketplace fees keep growing with every sale.

Which one is right for you?

Use this simple check. Be honest with your answers.

Your situationStart withWhy

You already sell well on Daraz and want more profitAdd ShopifyMove loyal buyers to your own store over time

The smart way to use both

You do not have to pick only one forever. The brands we see doing best follow this order:

Make Shopify your home. This is where your brand lives, where your ads go, and where your best offers appear first.
Use Daraz as an extra shelf. List your best sellers there to reach people who only shop inside the app.
Keep prices sensible across both. If Daraz is always cheaper, your own store will never win. Use bundles or Shopify-only offers to give people a reason to buy direct.
Build your own list. Add a small card in every parcel, including Daraz orders where the rules allow, inviting buyers to follow your brand or save your WhatsApp number.
Watch the split every month. Over time, aim for most of your profit to come from your own store, so a marketplace change can never shut your business.

Mistakes we see Pakistani brands make

Launching Shopify with no traffic plan. A store needs visitors. Plan the ads, content or influencer push before launch day.
Copying Daraz prices on Shopify. Your own store should compete on brand, trust and offers, not only on the lowest price.
Ignoring cash on delivery. Most Pakistani buyers still pay on delivery. A Shopify store that hides COD loses orders.
Putting the whole business on one marketplace. One policy change can cut your income overnight.
Not tracking profit per channel. Revenue on Daraz may look big, but check what is left after fees and returns.

Frequently asked questions

If you want to build a brand and plan to run ads, yes. Shopify gives you your own store, your own customers and better ad tracking. If you only want to test a product with no ad budget, Daraz is an easier first step.

Yes, and many brands do. Keep Shopify as your main store where your ads and best offers go, and use Daraz as an extra channel to reach buyers who only shop inside the app.

Yes. Cash on delivery can be added as a manual payment method, and you work with a local courier to deliver and collect the cash. Shopify does not add its own transaction fee to COD orders.

Daraz takes a commission and other charges from each order. The rate depends on the product category and changes over time, so check the current rate card in Daraz Seller Center before you set your prices.

The most common reason is no traffic. A new Shopify store does not get visitors on its own. You need ads, social media, influencers or SEO to bring people, and a store that builds trust so they order once they arrive.
